Yardi Kube: A single connected platform for flexible workspace management

Don’t hold on to alternative fantasies

At some point, each of us will be faced with a tough decision regarding our careers. For White it was the decision to leave his small town in Tennessee and move to NYC, where his connections began to grow and his work began to mature. When asked if he ever thought about staying in Tennessee, he replies with an honest simplicity, “I knew I wasn’t gonna stay, that’s not even an alternative fantasy of mine. I would have always thought: what if, what if, what if?” White followed his passion for work above all else, and though he faced many crossroads in his career, he stayed focused and did not dwell on any missed opportunities.

Freelancers often ask themselves these same internal questions. Should I continue in this uncertain economy with an often chaotic work life or should I find work that is more stable, more certain? What if I am on the wrong path? Maybe I should do something else? When faced with the myriad of questions that bombard freelancers on a daily basis, White’s words ring true. Try not to harbor any alternative fantasies. You are on your unique career path for a reason and you should do your best to stick it out, because even unfulfilling projects are informing your worldview and adding to the quality of your future work.

This is where a solid coworking space can provide a real benefit. The others in your coworking community can provide a buffer for the peaks and valleys of freelancing. They can remind you that you don’t have to take on the world alone and can help steer you back from the edge when you begin entertaining fantasies of a long lost alternative path.

Wayne White closes out the fantastic documentary on his fertile life as an artist with some apropos and age-old advice, “Follow your heart and your pleasure in art. Don’t do what you think is gonna be making you money, or what your parents want you to do, or what that beautiful girl or guy thinks you should be doing. Do what you love, it’s gonna lead to where you want to go...”

This is a pretty amazing message for anyone, but it seems specially crafted for freelancers. If you cultivate your passions and incorporate them into your work, good things will come. There is a reason you do what you do. You enjoy collaboration and crazy schedules. Stick to it. Give it all you have. Get together with others like you and join a coworking space. The connections and support you receive there can prove invaluable in ways you never imagined. And remember, you are always on the right path if you are doing what you love. There are no alternative fantasies.
