Yardi Kube: A single connected platform for flexible workspace management
Yardi Kube
What comes to mind when you think about Barcelona? Beaches, museums, music, architecture? Or more recently, the many protesters who still camp out in the main square of the Catalan capital? Spain has the highest unemployment rate in the EU at 20%, with almost every second young person affected. Monthly work contracts are common, especially for women and the under-30s. Coworking doesn’t fix all these problems. But for those who want to work more autonomously, there are now eight real coworking spaces in Barcelona which offer mutual support and a better chance at work.

Gracia Workcenter

Want to improve your language skills and discover other countries? You might get more than just a new language. For example, you’ll discover places like Gracia Workcenter. The founder Cristina learned about the new shared workspaces through a language course in San Francisco. Four years ago, she took the idea back to Barcelona and opened the city’s first coworking space in the Gracia district.

To date, there are 17 coworkers inhabiting the space. For between €250 and €300 a month, they can use all the printer, telephone, postal service, and meeting rooms, with 24-7 access every day – and adorable workspace managers are included in the cost.

Idea Coworking

Many coworking spaces are founded by freelancers who enjoy working with other people. Why shouldn’t that work with larger companies? The Idea group is an architectural office in the old city of Barcelona which offers up its space to outside freelancers. Behind the humble entrance and reception hides one of the best-equipped coworking spaces in the city.

Up to 25 coworkers can share the space, on an equal footing with the company’s employees. Only a set of doors separate the two cohorts, although these are normally left open. Taking part costs between €195 and €285. The desks with the best working atmosphere are, surprisingly, the cheapest. Half-day prices start at €120 monthly. For those who come in less than nine times a month, you can opt for the “express coworking” plan at €75. There is also a large event space with four video projectors, and a roof terrace with terrific views at the old town.

Enmedio

Enmedio started four years ago as a cultural association. Two years later they opened their event area up to coworkers who are looking for a flexible place to work. The seven permanent desks in the main office on the mezzanine floor are mostly permanently occupied, but you can still place a request for one.

The flexible option costs only €160 a month, and includes access between 10am and 7pm, as well as use of the telephone network, a small kitchen, coffee, a projector for meetings. This option is particularly suitable for people who only want to work a few weeks in Barcelona, and spend the rest of their time getting to know the city. Small siestas between 2pm and 4pm are common.

The Lab Coworking

The Lab Coworking has opened Barcelona’s latest coworking spaces. Rodero&Beggaio, a pair of architects who also work inside, designed this new-style office as a model project for a real estate firm to which they are connected. The initial phase includes twelve desks, while on a second floor with a large panorama window there is enough space for a further fifteen coworkers in the near future.

A permanent desk costs €260 per month. Desks can also be rented on a weekly or daily basis, for €90 or €30. Copies, postal service, storage space, kitchen and a large A3 printer are included in the cost.

MeetBCN

Plastic sheets still cover the chairs, lighting fixtures are still missing, and the meeting room is awaiting furniture delivery. But the desks are already in place. MeetBCN will soon open as Barcelona’s newest coworking space. The founder Isabel is working hard to screw together the remaining furniture before the opening party. But after the celebrations are over, up to 23 people will call this place their coworking home.

A full-time ticket costs €290 per month. You can also choose to work either before or after the siesta, and pay €175. MeetBCN is located at the intersection of four subway lines, four suburban train lines, and 22 bus connections; it’s an ideal place to commute to.

Adequate, Cowork, and KeepU

Cowork launched in the central suburb of Terrasse last year. You’ll pay €240 to work at one of the eight desks. Near the airport, in the suburb Viladecans, AdeQuat offers a coworking space fully equipped with all the trimmings for €210 a month. KeepU is a public relations agency in central Barcelona which offers extra desks for outside freelancers.

Hop Design

Hop Design is actually a small interior design office which recently joined the COWO Italian Coworking Project as a location. It is found in a small side street in the suburb of Barceloneta, just minutes away from the beach, and a skip away from França station.

Barcelona Office

This workspace looks nice in online photos, but its website doesn’t reveal much about itself - neither where it is located, nor any information about the cost or services. Only an email address and phone number are available (so why bother with a website at all?). We usually don’t visit such secretive places on principle. Perhaps you’ll see things differently and drop in here.
