Health

Health and work-life balance are increasingly important for society as a whole. There is a surge in preventative medicines and ‘mindness’, or a health of the spirit. Future office design will consider these trends, both from a physical and pathological perspective.

‘People coming into the office [should feel] energized and invigorated,’ Neubert said. [They shouldn’t be] going home in the afternoon feeling totally exhausted and burnt out.’

The office of the future will be utilized as a place to re-energize in order to deal with the stress of a fast changing world. Neubert points to one of their clients, Google in London, as an example. There, the office includes a cafeteria for people to dine together, a massage parlor to relax, and a gym.

How will these elements manifest?

We can already visualize how these megatrends will be applied in the workplace, by looking at coworking spaces, which address many of the issues that especially young employees experience with the traditional office. Certainly, when Bene was conducting its research, it was important to examine new generations of workers, or the digital natives, at work today. Coworking spaces provided some insight.

‘Companies can learn from coworking spaces how to be flexible and open. We can use them to learn how better to collaborate and exchange knowledge and ideas, which is what the new economy [calls for],’ said Neubert, but feels there is room for mutual exchange. ‘On the other side, coworking spaces could learn from companies how to grow with the companies that work in them.’

While Bene’s research does not categorically deduce that the ‘future workspace’ has a direct positive impact on employees and their work, it does address issues that the outdated office fails to overcome. Namely, the increasing need for collaboration, mobility, flexibility, and richer technologies within the workplace. For this reason, part of Bene’s mission statement is to encourage their clients to embrace openness and change.

Upon being asked whether Neubert considered it a part of Bene’s mission encourage openness and flexibility in the workspace, he replied that, ‘absolutely. It’s important for us not to just [fit out offices], but to create value. It’s our job to help progress and move forward, and to encourage collaboration and innovation. Let’s work together.’
